President Cyril Ramaphosa unveiled the statue of the late struggle icon and former South African statesman Nelson Mandela at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York on Monday.
President Cyril Ramaphosa unveiled the statue of the late struggle icon and former South African statesman Nelson Mandela at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York on Monday.
Ramaphosa expressed his appreciation showed by the international community by celebrating the centenary of Mandela's birthday.
Ramaphosa added the people of South Africa cherish Mandela as the founding father of democracy in the country.
"Whose life, sacrifices and extraordinary contribution to freedom continues to inspire successive generations," said Ramaphosa.
Ramaphosa said the people of South Africa are honoured and grateful that the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit was convened in his memory.
"It gives me great pleasure to present to you and the United Nations, on behalf of the government and the people of South Africa, this life-size statue of President Nelson Mandela."

Ramaphosa expressed his appreciation for the role the UN played in championing the struggle against apartheid.
"And in calling for the release of Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners."
