Mandela trial set to begin in March
Updated | By ANA
The trial of the grandson of the late former state president Nelson Mandela has been set down to start in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on March 9 next year.
The 24-year-old has been charged with raping a 15-year-old girl at a bar in Johannesburg in August.
The accused is currently out on bail of R7,000.
The state prosecutor on Monday told the Johannesburg Magistrate’s court that investigations into the alleged crime had not yet been finalised. The prosecutor had initially requested proceedings be postponed to January 13, 2016 for a potential witness to be consulted.
He added that the state had not yet consulted with the 15-year-old complainant as she had been “busy with exams” at school.
However, Magistrate Hasina Habib queried the delay, as she said the complainant would have finished school at the end of November.
The prosecutor told the court the complainant had gone to visit her grandmother and was in hospital for unknown reasons.
Habib earlier said she was worried about how long the case had been taking and said she wanted a trial date to be set as soon as possible. - ANA
