Gauteng police have launched a manhunt for a teacher who allegedly raped a grade 10 pupil at Umqhele Secondary School in Ivory Park outside Midrand.
The teacher allegedly raped the pupil at the school last Friday.
Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona wants police to intensify their search for the suspect.
"We are quite happy on how the school has managed this matter, they have reported to the law enforcement agencies and the case has been opened with the police and they are investigating.
"It is quite sad that the alleged perpetrator is now AWOL and has not come to work and we will have to add a charge of absconding from work so we are hopeful that the alleged perpetrator will be apprehended."
The department will offer psycho-social support to the family and the school.
"We have offered the support to the learner, the family, and all affected learners and the psychosocial unit team will also go to the school tomorrow to offer the necessary counselling," adds Mabona.
"They will also work with the family to make sure that the affected learner so that one may heal and the MEC has condemned this allegation."
