Mantashe vows to take state capture report on judicial review

Former ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe is set to take the third instalment of the Zondo commission report on judicial review after it released damning findings on Tuesday evening.

The report labels Mantashe, now Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, as a ‘brilliant connection’ between Bosasa and the ANC-led government.

His alleged link to officials at the facilities management company is suspected to have greased the tender procurement processes which saw billions in rands funnelled from the state.

The report recommends further investigation into Mantashe’s involvement in corruption linked to Bosasa, now African Global Operations, after he received security installations for no charge from the embattled company.

At the time in question, Mantashe held no government position.

During his testimony at the commission, almost a year ago, he denied knowingly getting any kickbacks from Bosasa.

On Wednesday, he addressed media at the department's offices in Pretoria.

“I presented myself, in my person and in my capacity and former secretary-general of the ANC- the governing party, with the firm conviction that the commission was a necessary cathartic process for our party and for our country, in the process ridding ourselves of the scourge of corruption.

“I did so in good faith, trusting that the commission will act in fairness and with high ethical aptitude, without innuendo and a cloud hanging over anyone of us, where legally substantive matters show,” he added.

While Mantashe’s legal team was still studying the report, he announced plans to take it on judicial review.

“The report itself says there is no prima facie case and that’s why they refer it for further investigation.

“That evidence and that case is not there.

“My argument is that we should take it on review because you can’t have a judicial process that makes assumption,” Mantashe said.

He added he stands by his testimony at the commission in an effort to clear his name.
