Mapisa-Nqakula appeared in court on Friday on 12 counts of corruption and one count of money laundering.

The charges relate to Mapisa-Nqakula’s tenure as the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans. During this time, she allegedly solicited and received kickbacks from a defence contractor.

The allegations against Mapisa-Nqakula were made by well-known defence industry businesswoman Nombasa Ntsondwa-Ndhlovu, who is the sole director of the logistics company Umkhombe Marine.

The company did business with the South African National Defence Force.

Ntsondwa-Ndhlovu claimed she paid bribes totalling some R2 million to Mapisa-Nqakula.

“She has indicated through her new attorney that she will not pursue filing representations with the office of the NDPP, and that she is ready to proceed with trial,” Investigating Directorate Against Corruption spokesperson Henry Mamothame said.

Mapisa-Nqakula’s R50,000 bail was extended until the next court appearance.
