Maponyane fine proves 'everyone is equal before the law'
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) believes the fine handed down to former Bafana Bafana star Marks Maponyane is proof that all South Africans are equal before the law.
The NPA confirmed the retired footballer had been found guilty of assaulting his wife Sylvia by the Tembisa Magistrates Court on Friday.
After pleading guilty to the charges against him, the sports commentator was given a fine of R3 000 or a 6 month suspended jail sentence.
The NPA's Phindi Mjonondwane says the verdict disproves claims of preferential treatment for prominent South Africans.
"No matter your social standing, if one breaks the law they will be dealt with accordingly," Mjonondwane says.
Law enforcement authorities have come under scrutiny amid claims of preferential treatment for people in the public eye.
The NPA has come under fire for the manner in which it dealt with the case of assault against Deputy Minister of Higher Education Mduduzi Manana, after he was summoned to court and not arrested.
Manana is due back in court on the 13th September.
