Masemola confirms sick Khumalo receiving 'best medical care’
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
Head of Crime Intelligence Dumisani Khumalo is receiving the best medical care, National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola confirmed on Wednesday.
The announcement comes after Khumalo’s third day of testimony at the Madlanga Commission was postponed due to him feeling unwell.
The commission is probing allegations of criminal infiltration and political interference in South Africa’s justice system.
Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says Masemola is in regular contact with him and can confirm that he is in good spirits.
“The General is following medical advice from his physician, and his health remains our top priority. We are committed to ensuring that he receives all the necessary support to recover fully,” Mathe added.
"The Madlanga Commission will be kept fully informed about all developments regarding Lieutenant General Khumalo’s condition. Once he is medically cleared, the commission will coordinate with him on when he will be available to continue his testimony. Our focus remains on his health and wellbeing at this time."
Khumalo was scheduled to deliver his third round of testimony at the commission on Wednesday, where he has been presenting evidence on alleged links between a criminal syndicate and South Africa’s justice system.
He reportedly fell ill after arriving at the Brigitte Mabandla Justice College, prompting the adjournment of proceedings.
Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels said the postponement should not be interpreted as a sign of unpreparedness or security concerns.
"Lieutenant General Khumalo has already provided detailed testimony over the past two days. Today’s postponement is simply due to his medical condition, and the commission remains fully operational," Michaels said.
On Tuesday, Khumalo walked the commission through a string of WhatsApp conversations between alleged ANC influence peddler Brown Mogotsi and suspected criminal mastermind Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala.
The messages touched on political financing and links to senior police officials, highlighting the sensitive nature of the testimony.
For now, SAPS has assured the public that Khumalo is in good hands and being closely monitored, with his health remaining the top priority.
