Masemola returns to Ad Hoc Committee probing SAPS
National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola has returned to Parliament's Ad Hoc Committee probing the alleged infiltration of the criminal justice system by criminals.
Masemola is responding to allegations made by previous witnesses at the committee, including suspended deputy police commissioner Shadrack Sibiya.
In his last appearance, Masemola said he was against the decision by suspended police minister, Senzo Mchunu, to disband the political killings task team.
Mchunu’s decision sparked allegations of political and criminal interference in the police, state prosecution, and judiciary by KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
The commissioner is the first of the last two witnesses before the committee wraps its business.
Masemola has maintained his assertion that Mchunu overreached by involving himself in operational matters when ordering the disbandment of the political killings task team (PKTT).
Mkhwanazi linked Mchunu’s decision to his alleged affiliation with suspected crime boss, Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala.
However, during his testimony before the committee, Mchunu maintained that he was within his rights when ordering the disbandment.
He said he received what he believed was credible information from Patricia Mashele and Mary de Haas about alleged impropriety by the PKTT.
“The right thing would’ve been to engage with me so that I could say whether there is a factual reason why this should happen, and that should have been done by me, not him directing the disbandment,” reiterated Masemola.
