Mashaba warns of legal action as home affairs deadline looms
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
City of Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba has given the Department of Home Affairs until end of Friday to come up with a plan to deal with undocumented foreign nationals in the city.

He was speaking on Jacaranda FM's Scenic Drive.
Mashaba said he wrote to the department more than a month ago, raising concerns over the influx of illegal foreign nationals.
"My lawyers wrote them a letter last month giving them until 24 November to come up with a plan on how they will deal with the undocumented foreign nationals.

"Last week, at the last minute, they responded asking me to give them two weeks and that two weeks is tomorrow (Friday) five o'clock and up to this afternoon (Thursday) we have not received any response."
Mashaba warned that he is ready to turn to the courts, should he not receive a satisfactory answer.
"If Home Affairs don't write back to me, then I will take the matter to court and the court will get home affairs to do what they are constitutionally obliged to do."
