Mashatile hails G20, budget as significant milestones

Deputy President Paul Mashatile has hailed South Africa’s successful hosting of the G20 Leaders’ Summit as a significant milestone for the country.
Delivering the annual address of the National Council of Provinces in Parliament on Thursday, Mashatile said the summit demonstrated Africa’s ability to participate meaningfully in global discussions on inclusive growth, sustainable development, and equitable international partnerships.
“The G20 Leaders’ Declaration emphasised support for vulnerable low- and middle-income countries, endorsed the G20 Declaration on Debt Sustainability, and reaffirmed the commitment to strengthening the Common Framework for Debt Treatment,” he said.
“The declaration also underscored the need for stronger disaster resilience and response mechanisms, including universal early-warning systems, one of the key deliverables of our presidency.”
Mashatile also highlighted the adoption of the 2025 national budget under the Government of National Unity as another significant achievement.
“This milestone reflects our collective resolve to put the country first by advancing legislation that promotes inclusive economic growth, job creation, poverty reduction, and relief from the rising cost of living,” he said.
“It demonstrates the power of unity in tackling the challenges facing our nation and delivering meaningful progress for all Africans.”
However, Mashatile stressed that despite the successes of the GNU, millions of South Africans continue to face harsh daily realities.
“Too many of our people still live in fragmented towns and cities and wake up to poverty, unemployment, the rising cost of living, corruption, and the scourge of gender-based violence and femicide. These are lived experiences that require urgent and unwavering intervention,” he said.
