Mashatile says ‘prejudicial’ to meet N1 assault victims
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
Deputy President Paul Mashatile has not met with any of the victims who were assaulted by a group of former bodyguards on the N1 in Johannesburg in 2023.
Mashatile appeared in Parliament on Thursday to answer questions from MPs.
The deputy president was asked if he had contacted the victims after the incident.
The eight Presidential Protection Services members were controversially cleared of misconduct during a police disciplinary process last month.
However, their criminal matter continues in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court.
"The Office of the National Commissioner of Police was responsible for the disciplinary processes of the eight members of the Presidential Protection Services. I was not involved in these procedures at any point," Mashatile said.
"I have never attempted to arrange a meeting with the complainant to allow the justice process to take place without any interference, because the matter is sub judice,
"Any engagements with any of the parties to the case could be prejudicial to them," he added.
At the same time, Mashatile told members of Parliament that he is opposed to any form of police brutality.
"I must also reiterate that I am against police brutality, including any form of violence directed at members of our community.
"Violence against members of the community, especially by those entrusted with upholding the law, is unacceptable and contrary to our values," he said.
