Matakata: Hawks will not meddle in politics
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
Newly-appointed acting Hawks boss Lieutenant-General Yolisa Matakata says she will ensure the elite crime fighting unit does not involve itself in politics.
She was previously the deputy head of the Hawks and succeeds General Berning Ntlemeza.
Ntlemeza lost a bid in the North Gauteng High Court on Wednesday to appeal an earlier ruling that set aside his 2015 appointment.
“I am going to continue with the work as mandated by the legislation. My primary focus is to ensure the Hawks delivers its mandate and does not get involved in politics,” says Matakata.
She says she will continue the fight against corruption.
“The Hawks is dealing with serious cases of corruption that are very complex and require time. Government has mandate us and 13 other departments to work on corruption. We will continue the work. We will work with the communities who report and follow through the information they give us.”
Matakata says she is certain she will receive the necessary support in the execution of her duties.
