Matric ‘21: Fight to battle results ‘unimportant amid bigger issues’

Education expert Jonathan Jansen believes the sector has bigger problems than the current debate about the publishing of matric results.

Jansen’s comments come on the eve of an urgent court application to challenge the Department of Basic Education’s decision not to publish matric results in the media.

Lobby group AfriForum, along with Maroela Media and Anlé Spies, a 2021 matriculant, served Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga with papers on Friday.

The urgent application will be heard in the High Court in Pretoria on Tuesday.

But Jansen says the country should have its sights set on bigger matters.

“In the bigger scene of things, this is unimportant, whether they publish it or not - I think it’s not a big thing. I don’t have string feelings about it because it’s not the names, it’s the exam numbers in the paper.

“In the bigger scheme of things, there’s a whole lot of other serious things to talk about such as making sure schools have adequate PPE equipment, teachers and whether or not teachers and pupils are safe in schools.”

Earlier, the department announced it would not oppose AfriForum’s application and will abide by any decision the court takes.

The class of 2021 will learn their fate on Thursday when the department releases the matric results.
