Matric cheats to attend formal hearings
Updated | By Olivia Phalaetsile
A total of 2089 learners in KwaZulu-Natal and 778 learners in Eastern Cape have been implicated, according to a report released by the department on Friday.
Department of Basic education Spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says teachers have also been implicated.
"We are also talking about teachers, but the teachers and principals will have to appear before the labour relations platform", he said.
Learners will be given a 14 day period to prepare for the formal hearing, where they will have an opportunity to tell their side of the story.
Mhlanga says the learners have their results blocked pending the formal hearings.
In Northwest, 22 learners have been banned from writing the matric examinations for 3 years.
In Mpumalanga, the 3 schools that were implicated have been cleared, while in the Western Cape a principle has been suspended.
Sanctions on the leaners in KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape will be determine by the nature of their involvement in the cheating.
