Mayor warns violence ‘won't be tolerated’ after church torching

Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza has warned residents not to engage in acts of violence following the looting and burning of a church in Katlehong on Tuesday.
Katlehong residents burnt down a church headed by Paseka Motsoeneng, better known as Pastor Mboro.
This was after the famous South African pastor and his security personnel violently threatened teachers and pupils in Matshediso Primary School.
In a video that has been making rounds on social media, the pastor is seen wielding a panga within the school premises.
Xhakaza says they are working on restoring peace in the area and avoiding further escalation of the violence.
"We unequivocally condemn all forms of violence, whether perpetrated by the pastor or his assailants," said the mayor.
"Vigilantism is illegal and cannot be tolerated under any circumstances. We urge the community to allow the authorities to investigate and resolve this matter through proper legal channels."
Police have since arrested five people, although it remained unclear if the pastor was among those taken into custody.
The group is set to appear before the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
