Airports around the country were closed following the outbreak of Covid-19 and the subsequent banning of all air travel.

Briefing the media on Monday, Mbalula said several air travel restrictions will be eased as the country eases level 3 of the lockdown.

The seven domestic airports expected to resume operations on July 1 are Bram Fischer International Airport in Bloemfontein, Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, Pietermaritzburg Airport, Port Elizabeth International Airport, Richards Bay Airport in KwaZulu-Natal, Skukuza Airport and Upington International Airport.

"International flights will resume when we are ready for them to resume,” said Mbalula.

“There are other factors we going to consider and also look at global experience, and whether or not we are ready for other nations to come to our country.

"I guess at that time the fight against Covid-19 would have gone the other direction.”

Cape Town International, OR Tambo International, Lanseria and King Shaka International Airport have all been open for business travel since the beginning of the month.
