African National Congress Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said he is seeking legal advice after former Minister of Home Affairs Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma made allegations that he used money to influence votes during the party’s 2022 elective conference.

Speaking in an interview on the African Renaissance Podcast, hosted by former Parliamentarian Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, Dlamini-Zuma claims that money played a significant role in determining leadership outcomes within the ANC.
Leading up to the December 2022 National Elective Conference, Dlamini-Zuma actively campaigned to contest the ANC presidency but later withdrew her name from the race.
During the interview, the former minister alleged that Mbalula distributed cash to delegates inside the conference clinic at the conference venue.
Mbalula was elected ANC Secretary-General in December 2022 during the party’s 55th National Elective Conference held at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg.
He vehemently denied the allegations, saying he was deeply disappointed by Dlamini-Zuma’s remarks that have damaged his reputation.
Mbalula maintains that his election was conducted fairly and freely and rejects any suggestion that his victory was influenced by improper conduct.
“I did not distribute money to delegates at the facility referred to as the clinic or anywhere else, to procure my own election or the elections of other comrades, at the 55th National Conference or the 54th National Conference, or any conference, council or gathering of the African National Congress.”
He said he could not allow the allegations to go unanswered and has approached his legal representatives for advice on the matter.
The ANC SG also said the claims should not distract the ANC and its supporters ahead of the local government election in November.
