Mbalula vows e-tolls decision ‘in two weeks’

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula has told MPs that a final decision on the future of the Gauteng e-toll system will be announced in the next two weeks.

He addressed the National Council of Provinces on Thursday.
A decision on the future of the unpopular system was meant to be announced by the start of April, but Mbalula said he cannot make any pronouncement until the cabinet had decided.
Mbalula told MPs he will make an announcement after the approval of his plan by the cabinet.
“We are engaging with the Treasury and we are
at the tail end of our processes, we expect that in the next two weeks we should be back to cabinet. Before we table our budget vote speech, we should have gone to you [Parliament] and to the public to announce the cabinet decision on the e-tolls.
“It has taken longer than we would have liked. We thought by now we would have finalised it, but unfortunately, it’s a big decision. We are not working alone. We go back and forth with [the] Treasury on these issues,
And that is how it is, we have to finalize this decision in the next two weeks and table it to you [Parliament]..,” said Mbalula.
