Mchunu dismisses 'baseless' claims by KZN police boss
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has denied allegations made against him by KZN's top cop, calling them baseless.
KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi claims the disbandment of the political killings task team was an attempt to derail key investigations.
He says a police probe has exposed a powerful criminal syndicate allegedly involving politicians, police officers, prosecutors, members of the judiciary, and business people, all apparently under the control of a drug cartel.
In a fiery Sunday morning press briefing, Mkhwanazi suggested the SAPS' political killings unit was dismantled because of its successful work in Gauteng, where he had deployed ten members from KZN to support Gauteng's Organised Crime Investigations Unit.
Mkhwanazi said the team had begun uncovering elements of a syndicate operating within the criminal justice system.
At the end of last year, Police Minister Senzo Mchunu instructed National Police Commissioner Fanie Masemola to disband the task team investigating political killings, saying it no longer served any purpose. It's a move Mkhwanazi believes had ulterior motives.
Mchunu responded to Mkhwanazi’s allegations by saying he will not allow his integrity to be undermined by insinuations made without evidence.
The minister added that he would review the statement and consider appropriate action.
