Mchunu hands over devices amid PKTT probe
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has handed over his electronic devices to police as part of ongoing investigations linked to the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) and alleged collusion with murder-accused tenderpreneur Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
Speaking to Jacaranda Newswatch, Mchunu’s spokesperson, Sthembiso Mshengu, confirmed the development.
"Yes, indeed, yesterday (Thursday) in the early hours of the evening, the police officers from the National Political Task Team did arrive at the official residence of the Minister to ask for the gadgets, and indeed the minister, in the presence of his lawyer, handed over those gadgets to the police.
"They include his personal cell phone, a laptop, as well as a tablet and two unused phones."
The move follows claims by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who implicated Mchunu in the PKCT disbandment.
Mshengu indicated that the handover is likely part of the investigation opened by the Commissioner for defeating the ends of justice.
"We believe that this is in line with the case that he opened. In due course, when they are ready, the Minister will actually subject himself to the next level of their investigation."
Mshengu also confirmed that Mchunu will be provided with a replacement phone to continue his personal and professional duties, including preparations for his testimony at the Madlanga Commission.
"He has a family to talk to. He has an organisation to lead, and he has a whole lot of other things personally that he should be conducting with his gadgets. So he will be getting another phone for his life to continue."
The date for Mchunu’s appearance before the Madlanga Commission is yet to be confirmed.
The minister remains on special leave
