McKenzie under fire after skipping R31m World Cup parliamentary probe
The DA has vowed to use Parliamentary procedures to compel the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, to answer questions regarding the R31 million spent on South Africa's participation in the recent FIFA World Cup.
McKenzie released a statement last month saying the expenditure was a legitimate investment in tourism, culture, sport, and international promotion.
He said the figure did not represent money spent on himself but covered a broader programme involving more than 150 participants, including officials, artists, cultural representatives and programme support teams.
However, the DA said McKenzie failed to answer MPs' questions about the spending during a scheduled appearance on Tuesday.
The DA’s Leah Potgieter said avoiding Parliament is inexcusable.
“The DA sees this as blatant absconding of his legal duty to account to Parliament. It is an act of defiance and shows that he has something to hide.”
The party said McKenzie only appeared for earlier matters but left the room when the World Cup spending probe began.
Members of Parliament were left dissatisfied when McKenzie instead offered an overview presentation.
The DA has threatened to follow through and invoke parliamentary rules to compel him to attend and answer questions from MPs.
