Police in Mpumalanga are investigating a case of culpable
homicide after a truck and taxi crashed head-on near Middelburg last night,
claiming the lives of 11 people.
Spokesperson for the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Moeti Mmusi, says the incident happened on the R575 Road between Middelburg and Bethal.
He says a concrete mixer truck collided head-on with the taxi, travelling towards Johannesburg.
“Eleven people died on the spot while seven more who were seriously injured were rushed to a nearby Middleburg hospital,” says Mmusi.
Mmusi says the R575 Road is partially opened to allow traffic flow.
He adds investigations are underway to ascertain what led to the incident.
“Those who were killed yesterday include two children, aged between four and six years.”
