Minister Dlamini must go: Cosatu
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
Trade union federation Cosatu has called on Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini to resign - or be fired.
Cosatu briefed the media following its ordinary Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting that started on Monday.
There is growing concern over the South Africa Social Security Agency (SASSA) ability to pay the next round of social grants. The department's contract with Cash Paymaster Services (CPS) expires at the end of March. However, the department is yet to indicate exactly how the grants to some 17 million beneficiaries would be distributed.
Cosatu believes Dlamini must take political responsibility for the debacle.
General Secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali says the CEC expressed concern over the inept manner in which the extension of the contract was handled.
"This is likely to see the most vulnerable groups of South Africa, who are beneficiaries of the social grants system, not getting paid on 1 April 2017. There are 17 million of South Africa's poorest who are dependent on social security every month," says Ntshalintshali.
The General Secretary says they are appealing to President Jacob Zuma to intervene - and that heads need to roll at SASSA.
"Minister Dlamini and her team in the department need to take political responsibility for the crisis by resigning or being dismissed," says Ntshalintshali.
