“The ministry of higher education and training takes this opportunity to congratulate all our students for returning to their respective academic programmes today,” it said in a statement.

“All our universities, with the exception of the University of the Western Cape, resumed their programmes and began refocusing on learning, including preparations for their final examinations.”

On Monday, students from the University of Cape Town picketed outside Parliament for a report from government on implementing a broader set of demands, which include free tertiary education for all.

In response to a memorandum handed over by the group, Deputy Higher Education Minister Mduduzi Manana said the quest for free education was noble and would spur government to regulate tertiary education fees.
