South African Francois van Niekerk has been found alive and unharmed at the volatile northern Palma in Mozambique.
The 21-year-old went missing on Wednesday when Al-Shabaab militant forces raided Palma.
His stepmother, Cindy van Niekerk says the past couple of days has been a traumatic experience.
"Yes, it's wonderful news after missing for four days. They have started with the evacuation process leading from Palma.
"He made contact with us, he's been through a traumatic experience, but I am happy to say that he has safely been found, unharmed, injured, and now the healing can start."
Van Niekerk says his husband flew out of Mozambique before their son was attacked.
"His dad runs a business in Mozambique. His dad flew to South Africa on Tuesday and when the attack happened.
“He was at the workplace on Wednesday, he was alone and that's when the attack happened."
