Mixed bag at the pumps in August
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
Motorists are in for a mixed bag at the pumps in August, as fuel price adjustments come into effect at midnight on Tuesday.
According to the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, the price of both grades of petrol will drop by 28 cents per litre, offering some relief to private vehicle owners.
However, diesel users will feel the pinch, with an increase of between 63 and 65 cents per litre. The price of illuminating paraffin will also rise by 43 cents per litre.
On the upside, LP gas will become cheaper, dropping by 69 cents per kilogram nationally and by 78 cents per kilogram in the Western Cape.
Department spokesperson Robert Maake says global oil trends and currency movements were behind the changes.
"The slightly lower price of oil on average during the period under review, the rand strengthened slightly against the US dollar and cushioned the prices by four to five cents per litre."
Maake added that the slate levy – a mechanism used to recover losses or distribute gains in fuel pricing – will remain unchanged at zero cents per litre for both petrol and diesel.
