MK Party chief whip Mokoena-Zondi charged for allegedly defrauding staff
The uMkhonto weSizwe Party has confirmed that its Chief Whip, Mmabatho Mokoena-Zondi, was arrested on fraud charges on Thursday.
The Hawks in the Western Cape said a 46- year-old woman from a ‘well-known political party’ would make her first court appearance after allegedly defrauding victims more that R230 000.
Mokoena-Zondi was appointed MK Party chief whip in February this year, taking over from Colleen Makhubele.
While the MK Party said it would only release a full statement on the matter later in the day, it said it had noted that Mmabatho Mokoena-Zondi had voluntarily presented herself to authorities.
Investigators allege that between August and December 2024, Mokoena-Zondi recruited four individuals into the party as researchers and, during their employment, she demanded payments under the pretext that the monies were for the legal fees of MK Party President Jacob Zuma.
She appeared in the Cape Magistrates Court, where he was granted R30 000 bail.
The matter was postponed until 18 June.
