Mkhwanazi given deadline to address 'power abuse' claims
KZN's police chief has until Wednesday to respond to 'power abuse' claims against him.
Police watchdog IPID is investigating an allegation that Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi interfered with the arrest of a senior correctional services official in 2023.
The official was suspected of running a drug cartel.
Mkhwanazi previously denied the allegations, telling media outlets there was insufficient evidence to arrest the official.
The commissioner has been given two days to submit a sworn statement to IPID.
The watchdog's Lizzy Suping said the initial claim that the police minister requested the probe was false and made in error.
"This investigation is a result of an anonymous complaint from the public. IPID maintains that although it receives complaints and tips-offs from various sources, its investigations remain independent and impartial.
"This investigation is still in its infancy stages, and IPID will only engage on the matter once the investigation is concluded."
In a statement, Minister Senzo Mchunu confirmed he did not order the probe.
