Mkhwanzi and Witness K granted bail of R5,000
The suspended deputy chief of the Ekurhuleni metro police, Julius Mkhwanazi, and the Madlanga Commission’s Witness K were granted bail of R5,000 each in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
The duo face charges relating to the alleged robbery of precious stones from a businessman in Killarney dating back to 2023.
Witness K previously testified before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where she implicated Mkhwanazi in the alleged operation.
The state did not oppose their release on bail.
Mkhwanazi's legal team argued that he has shown in the other cases against him that he has adhered to the conditions of bail and has appeared in court when required.
His legal team requested his release on warning, arguing that he has already incurred substantial costs in the other cases against him.
Mkhwanazi claimed in an affidavit that Witness K implicated him in the case because she was 'devastated' after he broke off a romantic relationship.

Witness K's legal team argued there was no indication that she would contravene bail conditions or commit any offences which would make her ineligible for release on bail.
Witness K appeared in court with her face covered after obtaining permission from the court to do so on 'safety concerns.'
The case has been postponed to 25 August for further investigation.
