A 30-year-old man was critically injured when residents of Majakaneng accused him of being part of a gang who robbed a house and raped a woman, North West police said on Monday.
Early on Sunday morning, a woman reported a case of house robbery and rape to Mooinooi police, Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said.
"It is alleged that six suspects went into the victim's boyfriend's place while she was asleep, three stood outside and three went inside the house, one carried a firearm while the other two raped her.
"The suspects fled the scene with a plasma TV and some of her boyfriend's clothes."
Later on Sunday, an elderly woman reported to police that a man had pointed a firearm at her and ordered her to undress but then left her without physically harming her.
"The situation in Majakaneng got out hand when the community heard about those cases and they started to barricade the roads," Ngubane said.
They saw the 30-year-old man carrying a plasma TV and began to beat him.
Police intervened and the man was taken to hospital.
Police and the traffic department cleared the roads and the situation had returned to normal by Monday morning.
