Mogajane resigns from business positions amid VBS bribery claims
Former National Treasury director-general Dondo Mogajane announced his resignation on Monday from all business positions, including the boards on which he served.
It comes amid claims that he pocketed a R1 million bribe linked to VBS Bank during his time at Treasury.
He was implicated by former VBS Mutual Bank chairperson Tshifhiwa Matodzi, who is serving 15 years in prison for the collapse of the now-defunct bank.
He is also the chair of the Government Employees' Pension Fund (GEPF),
In his affidavit, Matodzi alleged that Mogajane was paid R1m in exchange for his intervention and not to force municipalities to withdraw investments at the bank.
Mogajane has denied any wrongdoing.
"Recently, I have been confronted with unfounded and malicious allegations made by a convicted criminal with questionable motives. These are baseless accusations,” Mogajane said on Monday.
"I acknowledge the gravity of such claims. It is with a deep sense of responsibility that I have made the decision to step down from all my professional roles and the boards that I have served, effective immediately.
"I will not be engaging in further interviews or public commentary on this matter. I believe in the importance of due process and remain confident that, in time, the truth will prevail, and my reputation will be fully restored.”
Mogajane hinted that he would make a comeback in business or politics once he had cleared his name.
"I plan to write a book about my experiences in public service, recounting the challenges, triumphs, and remarkable individuals I have encountered along the way.
"While this chapter of my career has drawn to a close, it is not the conclusion of my story. This period marks a pause, not an endpoint. At a later stage, I may decide to possibly re-enter the private sector and, maybe, even politics.”
