Montana announced his departure on social media on Monday, sharing a screenshot of an email addressed to the party’s now-suspended Deputy President, John Hlophe, in which he formally tendered his resignation from the National Assembly.

In a statement, MK Party national spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela acknowledged Montana’s departure, noting that although he is leaving Parliament, the party “takes comfort in his ongoing commitment to its broader mission”.

“Comrade Montana has served the MK Party with steadfast objectivity, constructive guidance and principled contributions that have strengthened our caucus and sharpened our collective political effectiveness.

“His calm but firm leadership and strategic insight have inspired many, especially younger cadres who looked to him for consistency, discipline and revolutionary wisdom,” said Ndhlela.

Montana’s resignation comes amid a legal battle with the South African Revenue Service, which is pursuing a sequestration order against him over a tax debt of R55 million.

Montana, however, disputes the amount, insisting he owes no more than R8 million.

SARS has outlined several claims of non-compliance on Montana’s part, including years in which he allegedly failed to submit tax returns or provide required documentation despite being granted multiple extensions.

Despite the controversy, Ndhlela emphasised Montana’s long-standing dedication to the movement.

“His service to the struggle and to the people of South Africa has been marked by loyalty, courage and unwavering conviction.”
