Home Affairs spokesperson Siya Qoza says they will be kept at the Lindela Repatriation Centre in Krugersdorp until the processes to have them deported have been completed.

“In terms of the law, we now need to get in touch with their embassies to confirm that they are indeed citizens of which they are saying they are coming from. Once that is done, we can deport but we cannot deport without having that information.”

At least 600 people were arrested or taken for verification following raids in the Johannesburg CBD targeting counterfeit goods.

Qoza says 111 others are awaiting their fate after the magistrate ordered that their documents be checked.
