More than 80 objections received by IEC

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says it has received over 80 elections-related objections by Wednesday evening.
With 97% of the results now on the system, the commission is expected to announce the final results of the local government elections on Thursday evening.
The ANC is leading the national vote with 45.94%, followed by the DA with 21.17% and the EFF in third at 10.38%
IEC commissioner Mosotho Moepya told the media on Wednesday evening the IEC will only deal with objections, as complaints are resolved at the various voting stations.
“Just after 7 (pm on Wednesday), I was informed that we have just over 80 but our system was still downloading everything that was sent.
“They are sent by email or delivered by hand. In the email process, there were just over 80 of them. We had begun looking at those and we will deal with them,” said Moepya.
He said the commission will resolve the objections after the final announcement of the results.
“There is a difference between this election and the provincial and national election in that respect. In provincial and national elections, we must deal with all of them before we declare the result of the election.
“In this election that requirement is slightly loosened, we can determine the results but to the extend that the objection come and change the situation we can then approach the electoral court and set that election result aside.”
