More floodgates closed at Vaal Dam
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
More floodgates have been closed in the Vaal Dam on Saturday thus reducing the outflow to the Bloemhof Dam.
Department of Sanitation spokesperson Wisane Mavasa says the closure comes as a result of the Hydrological Monitoring and Forecasting System which demonstrated a decrease in water capacity at the Vaal Dam.
“Two more sluice gates are closed today. Four gates have been closed so far, following 2 gates that were closed yesterday afternoon on the account of decreasing water levels at the dam, resulting in 8 gates remaining open. The Vaal Dam storage capacity is currently at around 113%.”
Water levels at the Bloemhof Dam also continue to show a decline.

The Dam is now sitting at 109% capacity compared to 112% on Friday.
The Department has urged communities to continue monitoring the water flow in the affected rivers and dams.
“We urge communities to remain alert, avoid crossing low-lying bridges, overflowing rivers and streams, and to evacuate where necessary if residing near these water courses that are overflowing.”
