More money in your pocket - thanks to recent rain
Updated | By Suné du Toit
This year might turn out to be a better year than what we have seen over the last few years.
This according to senior economist at Old Mutual Investment Group, Johann Els.
Els says the good rain over the last few weeks in the country's maize growing areas is good news for the economy.
"We expect a better maize crop. That will help agricultural production and overall GDP growth. We expect somewhat better growth this year, not great yet, but better growth than the last few years," says Els.
Els says he expects food inflation to fall fairly rapidly over the next few months.
"That will help overall inflation to fall to about 5 percent, or slightly below, by the middle of this year from the 6.6 percent we had in January," says Els.
He says lower inflation and the tight budget will help the overall policy mix.
"We do expect interest rates to be cut in the second half of this year," says Els.
