More police needed to process last minute firearm applications
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
The Freedom Front Plus (FF+) has requested Gauteng Police commissioner, Lt.-Gen. Elias Mawela for more police officers to process firearm applications on the eve of the firearm amnesty period that ends on Sunday, 31 January 2021.
FF+ Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL), Kobus Hoffman, says they expect an influx of people to hand in their applications or hand over firearms at various police stations over the weekend.
“The Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus) has asked the police commissioner to allocate more police personnel to the police stations because they cannot handle the load at this stage.
“In some police stations they have only allocated one or two members assisting and the influx of amnesty seekers are just too high for the police to cope with,” says Hoffman.

The deadline for members of the public to hand in their firearms is 16:00 on Sunday.
The firearm amnesty, which allows members of the public to surrender their guns to police, has been running for six months, starting in August 2020.
Thus far, 40 729 firearms and 199, 573 rounds of ammunition have been surrendered.
