Spokesperson Russel Meiring says the driver of one of the vehicles alleges her car was pelted with rocks by protesters before the collision.

"We found a woman and her two daughters had sustained several small cuts on their arms and faces. The woman told paramedics that her vehicle had apparently been pelted with rocks while driving down the road," says Meiring.

Protests on the R59 have entered a third day.

The police’s Captain Mavela Masondo has warned motorists to avoid the R59.

"If you are coming from Johannesburg you can only drive until Meyer Road, there you will find SAPS and Metro Police who will assist you in finding alternative routes. If you are driving from Vereeniging towards Johannesburg, its safe until Johan Le Roux road. You will find more officers there who will help with alternative routes," says Masondo.

He says the situation has become tense.

"We have deployed members of the public order policing. We are trying to stabilise the situation as it is currently tense. Motorists must avoid the area," he says.

The reasons for the protests are still unclear.

No arrests have been made.
