Motorists warned to avoid crossing flooded roads

Johannesburg emergency services warned motorists on Thursday to avoid crossing low-lying bridges and flooded roads.
The warning comes after the South African Weather Service issued a yellow level 2 alert for severe thunderstorms.
On Wednesday night, heavy rains and flooding affected several areas in Weltevreden Park, Strubens Valley, Newlands, Parkhurst, and Randpark Ridge.
EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said two motorists were rescued, one from the Jukskei Platina Bridge along Witkoppen Road in Jukskei Park and the other in Weltevreden Park.
Both motorists were attempting to cross low-lying bridges.
“There was also a wall collapse in Honey Bee, a residential complex in the area, but no injuries were reported.”
No fatalities or injuries have been reported.
Mulaudzi warned that roads may still have debris from the overnight rainfall and advised motorists to drive with caution.
He also urged residents in low-lying areas to avoid crossing river streams.
Mulaudzi said the weather warning comes with a threat of flash floods in low-lying areas.
"EMS remains on high alert, monitoring all seven city regions with teams, including the aquatic rescue unit and fully operational fire stations, ready to respond to emergencies."
