Motsoaledi wants speedier prosecutions after AFU seizes Maumela assets
Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has urged faster prosecutions in the Tembisa Hospital corruption case after the High Court ordered the forfeiture of assets worth more than R300 million linked to Hangwani Maumela.
Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has urged law enforcement agencies to speed up the prosecution of those responsible for looting at Tembisa Hospital.
This comes after more than R300 million worth of assets belonging to business tycoon Hangwani Maumela were forfeited to the State.
Among the assets are six properties, including a R9.5 million house in Ballito, a Cape Town mansion worth over R88 million and two in Johannesburg worth a combined R141 million.
There are also four Lamborghinis, a Bentley, and a boat.

Authorities have linked Hangwani to the looting of R2 billion in government funds meant for Tembisa Hospital in Ekurhuleni.
The High Court in Johannesburg granted the Asset Forfeiture Unit a final forfeiture order on Monday.
Whistleblower Babita Deokaran flagged the fraud and corruption at Tembisa Hospital while acting as CFO in the Gauteng Health Department.
She was shot and killed outside her Johannesburg home nearly five years ago.
Motsoaledi said he hopes the order is just the beginning of a process to confiscate all assets of people involved in looting Tembisa Hospital.
“We implore the Assets Forfeiture Unit to expedite the recovery process,” he added.
“We are also calling upon law enforcement agencies to complete the job through the arrest and criminal prosecution of Hangwani Maumela and his ilk. No one should be allowed to help themselves to resources which were meant for the sick – only a sick society will allow that to happen without any far-reaching and concrete repercussions.”
