Mpofu accuses Ramaphosa of using power to victimise Mkhwebane
Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has told the Western Cape High Court through her legal counsel that President Cyril Ramaphosa is using his power as head of state to victimise her.
Mkhwebane was in the Western Cape High Court on Wednesday to apply for an interdict to stop Ramaphosa from suspending her pending the parliamentary impeachment process against her.
Advocate Dali Mpofu told the court his client is being victimised by the most powerful.
Mpofu said President Ramaphosa doesn’t have the power to suspend Mkhwebane while the issue is still before Parliament.
“The belief is that no one in the world can suspend the public protector while the proceedings are ongoing. Assuming that we are wrong, then we are saying stop President Ramaphosa specifically from suspending Mkhwebane because he is conflicted,” says Mpofu.
Mpofu also said the recent leaked SMS that pre-empted Mkhwebane’s Constitutional Court rescission application was an attempt to influence the high court application.
He described the SMS as the biggest scandal to ever hit the courts.
“This is exactly the biggest scandal ever to hit our court because... the mere fact that the judgment is delayed by a week cannot, by any stretch of the imagination, be read to mean that what Abramjee was saying was not going to happen on the 29th if it had not been outed.”
