Mpofu, Ngcukaitobi to challenge Zimbabwe election results
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
South African powerhouse lawyers Dali Mpofu and Tembeka Ngcukaitobi are in Zimbabwe to challenge that country’s election results.
Mpofu and Ngcukaitobi are set to help opposition party MDC overturn the Zimbabwean election results.
MDC leader Nelson Chamisa will challenge the results in the country’s Constitutional Court following Emmerson Mnangagwa’s narrow victory in last month’s poll.
Chamisa claims the ruling ZANU-PF and the country’s electoral commission had rigged the vote count.
“Mpofu and Ngcukaitobi are seasoned lawyers. They have argued matters that involved electoral disputes and in the Constitutional Court. Their role is extremely important helping the court arrive at a just and equitable decision,” says MDC’s lawyer, Nqobizitha Mlilo.
A full beach of the Constitutional Court will hear the matter and must be finalised within 14 days set by the electoral laws.
The July 30 vote is the first poll since the ousting of Robert Mugabe last year.
Mugabe's successor, Emmerson Mnangagwa, won with 50.8% of the vote with Chamisa scoring 44.3%.
Mlilo believes the court will rule in their favour.
