The Portfolio Committee on Health and the Select Committee on Health and Social Services joined Minister of Health Zweli Mkhize on a visit to the province on Wednesday amid the surge in infections and deaths.

The ability of the Eastern Cape to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic has been a concern since the start of the outbreak in March

The health committee’s chairperson Sibongiseni Dhlomo says the committee is concerned over the strategies implemented by the province.

“We are not happy with certain things that are happening, but we commend the work that is being done by the ECPMU (Eastern Cape Project Manager Unit).

“Even though the report lacked detail, it is reassuring to receive reports on the ongoing work being done in the province. The plans and interventions presented lacked definite time frames, which also frustrated the committees.”

Dhlomo believes there has been significant improvement in the province since last month’s oversite visit.

At the same time Mkhize slammed the province for not providing daily data on Covid-19 deaths.

On Wednesday, 400 out of the 572 deaths reported nationally were from the Eastern Cape.
