Police say the family of five was admitted to Shongwe hospital after they reportedly all showed the same symptoms when they suddenly fell ill after eating.

Four children; a girl aged four, two boys aged six and seven, and the deceased are staying with their 23-year-old aunt.

They were all taken to the hospital and the toddler, unfortunately, did not survive.

“Their aunt was treated and discharged from the hospital on the same day and the other three children are still receiving medical attention in hospital,” said Mpumalanga police spokesperson Selvy Mohlala.

“Currently it is not yet known what the cause of death and infection might be, but after the post-mortem is conducted and samples from the survivors are taken, the real cause of death and infection would be revealed,” he added.

Police have pleaded with parents and guardians to take extra caution when buying food. Mohlala said members of the public should always ensure that the food they buy has not expired.
