Mthethwa correct to listen to public sentiment over flag project, says committee

The Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts and Culture says it believes Minister Nathi Mthethwa made the correct decision by asking for a review into the controversial flag project.
Mthethwa ordered his department to review the controversial R22 million flag project on Thursday after a public outcry over the amount of money it would cost taxpayers.
The committee chairperson Beauty Dlulane says given the current economic climate, it was important for the minister to listen to the people.
“The committee was briefed on the concept on Tuesday, when the project was punted for its contribution in job creation and diversifying the South African heritage landscape.”
“The figures were presented as estimations and that the department said it had only undertaken geotechnical studies that cost no more than R1.7 million. It was indicated that the remainder of the budget would be used as the project proceeded,” adds Dlulane.
She says the committee did not have an issue with the intention behind the flag.
‘’But the committee is happy that the department has listened to the public sentiment and thus committed to rethink the concept and the figures involved.”
