This comes after the removal of the Cecil John Rhodes statue at the University of Cape Town and the vandalism of many others, the most recent one being of Mahatma Ghandi in Johannesburg over the weekend.

The has been a lot of debate on what colonial statues represent and what place they have  in a democratic South Africa, with the Economic Freedom Fighters saying the statues should be taken to an apartheid museum and  replaced with statues of icons in all parts of society.

The ANC has condemned the vandalism and advocated for dialogue.

Many South Africans have taken to Twitter and Facebook to air their views, with some supporting the removal of the statues, others saying they should be destroyed, and others warning this would be removing part of South African history.

The debate has caused some division in the country. With some organisations protesting to protect the statues and others protesting for their removal.
