Mtolo: ANC NEC must share blame for poor performance

The ANC's KZN Provincial Secretary, Bheki Mtolo, has refuted claims that the provincial executive committee is responsible for the party’s poor performance in the May elections.

Mtolo made the remarks during an ANC organisational renewal event in Durban on Thursday evening.

The remarks come ahead of the National Working Committee’s meeting with KZN and Gauteng on Monday.

The ANC had a poor showing in the May elections, failing to secure a national majority and falling below the 50% mark for the first time.

In KZN, the party's support fell to 17%  - mainly due to the rise of former president Jacob Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe Party.

In Gauteng,  the ANC only managed to garner 33% of the vote – leading to calls for the dissolution of both provincial leadership structures.

However, some leaders argue that both provinces need strengthening, not dissolution.

Mtolo insists that the ANC's National Executive Committee, led by President Cyril Ramaphosa and Secretary General Fikile Mbalula, should share responsibility for the party’s poor performance at the polls.

"You see comrades, the ANC at national level got 40 per cent, national, meaning the NEC at national level lost the country to 40 per cent.”

“The National Executive, led by Ramaphosa and  Mbalula, lost the country to 40 per cent.

“They must take that responsibility. me and  Duma, we are taking our own responsibility of losing the province (KZN) to 17 percent," he said.

In a letter sent to Mtolo, Mbalula indicated that the meeting is compulsory for all PEC members.

“It is compulsory that all PEC members attend the meeting with the NWC. The agenda of the meeting will be shared in due course,” he said.

The NWC is made up of the top seven leadership, including President Cyril Ramaphosa, Deputy President Paul Mashatile, Secretary General Fikile Mbalula, and Treasurer General Gwen Ramokgopa and 80 additional members.
