A man has been arrested in Sydenham, Durban after having been on the run for ten years, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Thursday.
Spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said Lungelo Lennox Jama was apprehended in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Armed with three warrants of arrest, members of the Durban Flying Squad, Inanda Crime Intelligence and Sydenham police services stormed a shack in Kennedy Road and arrested Jama, Zwane said.
“Jama has been on the wanted suspects list since 2005,” he said.
“He was wanted for murder, rape and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm that he allegedly committed in Duncan Village in the Eastern Cape.”
Zwane said the suspect fled the village in 2005 to hide out in the cluttered shacks in Kennedy Road. Jama moved from his shack to his girlfriends when he became aware that police were on his trail, he said.
KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni has praised police for apprehending the suspect.
“As the saying goes, crime does not pay”, said Ngobeni.
“Let this be the lesson to others that, no matter how long ago the crime was committed, we will make sure that the perpetrator is captured and kept behind bars”.
