N3 open to traffic
The N3 highway has been reopened following the collapse of a pedestrian bridge in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The highway between Van Buuren Road and the M2 Geldenhuys Interchange was closed on Wednesday following the collapse of the disused bridge.
The cause of the collapse is not known.
Several people were injured after four vehicles, three trucks and a sedan, crashed into the concrete bridge which was lying across both the north and south bounds of the freeway.
Ekurhuleni Emergency Services' William Ntladi says the highway was reopened just after midnight on Thursday.
"We opened all the lanes, both directions north and south for traffic so it is declared open. The scene is safe.
"The morning traffic won't be affected, as everything has been cleared up. It's just those minor things like the side rails and metal rails to be replaced, but people can utilize that area."
