The National Taxi Association (NTA) has decided to withdraw from Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula’s national taxi lekgotla.
The lekgotla is set to start on the 29 October as the country concludes transport month.
Mbalula launched the lekgotla to bring stakeholders together to tackle issues facing the industry.
Spokesperson to the association Theo Malele said they cannot take part in the lekgotla if NTA is not given the same speaking rights as the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco).
"In the manner, it was handled we are expected to be the praise singers of the minister's preferred organisation which is Santaco -with no participatory independence and identity.
"We cannot allow that we go and entrench Santaco as the apex leadership of the taxi industry and give them statutory powers to regulate the taxi industry.”
The association has informed the minister of their decision to withdraw from participation, but “Mbalula has decided to hide his head under the sand”, says Malele.
The union has given Mbalula 10 days to resolve the matter or the association would gear up for a national strike.
